چکیده

Two papers of Pindyck (2000, 2002) that modeled the control of stock pollutants as optimal stopping problems contained closed form solutions that are incorrect. This paper discusses a subtle error in the derivation and demonstrates how solutions to these and related problems can be obtained numerically. The numerical solutions are contrasted with the ones contained in Pindyck’s original papers. 2011 Elsevier B.V.Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. * Corresponding author. Optimal timing problems in environmental economics

Because of the uncertainties and irreversibilities that are often inherent in environmental degradation, its prevention, and its economic consequences, environmental policy design can involve important problems of timing. I use a simple two-period model to illustrate these optimal timing problems and their implications for environmental policy. I then lay out and solve a continuous-time model o...

Environmental economics and ecological economics: the contribution of interdisciplinarity to understanding, influence and effectiveness

This paper reviews developments in both environmental economics and ecological economics with respect to their progress towards environmental interdisciplinarity and towards providing solutions to environmental problems. The concepts, methods, theories and assumptions of each field of knowledge are reviewed and the extent to which they depart from the dominant neoclassical paradigm of economics...

Stochastic Programming and Decision Theory in the Management of Natural Resources

The growing interest for environmental issues and for a rational approach to natural resources exploitation has generated a whole new subfield of Operational Research tightly connected to Environmental Economics. Such interaction not only entails the development of new techniques addressing natural resource management problems, but also leads to a different prospective in considering the two di...

Optimal timing of regime switching in optimal growth models: A Sobolev space approach

This paper analyses the optimal timing of switching between alternative and consecutive regimes in optimal growth models. We derive the appropriate necessary conditions for such problems by means of the standard techniques from calculus of variations and some basic properties of Sobolev spaces. Keywords: Multi-stage optimal control, Sobolev spaces, Optimal growth models JEL classi…cation: C61; ...

An efficient one-layer recurrent neural network for solving a class of nonsmooth optimization problems

Constrained optimization problems have a wide range of applications in science, economics, and engineering. In this paper, a neural network model is proposed to solve a class of nonsmooth constrained optimization problems with a nonsmooth convex objective function subject to nonlinear inequality and affine equality constraints. It is a one-layer non-penalty recurrent neural network based on the...
